Ion Timofte

Ion Timofte ( born December 16, 1967 in Anina, District Caras -Severin ) is a former Romanian football player. He played a total of 280 games in the Romanian Divizia A and the Portuguese Super League.

Career

Timofte began playing football in his hometown at Anina Anina Minerul. At the age of 21 years he moved to the neighboring club CSM Resita, the (Division II today ) was represented at the time in Divizia B. In 1989 it undertook Politehnica Timişoara, which was ascended straight into the Divizia A and was one of the best clubs in the Western Romania. In " Poli " is Timofte was already in his first season as a regular player say and put his goalscoring midfielder as proof. At the end of the season, he managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup, where the club was initially off Atlético Madrid, in the second round but was eliminated against Sporting Lisbon. In the domestic league, the club finished off in sixth place and missed the re- qualification for the European Cup.

In 1991 Timofte left as many Romanian national team in front of him his home and tied himself to the Portuguese giants FC Porto. Again, he was a regular player and contributed nine and twelve Goals for winning the league title in 1991/92 and 1992 /93. In 1994 he finally won the Portuguese Cup.

After three years Timofte left FC Porto and joined local rivals Boavista. In his new club Timofte took some years before he was able to prevail as a regular player. Only in the 1997/98 season, he established himself and found his marksmanship again. He had previously won the Cup victory in 1997. In the season 1998/99 he came up with 15 hits and won with his club the runner-up behind FC Porto. In 2000 Timofte ended his career.

National

Timofte played a total of ten games for the Romanian national football team, scoring one goal. He made his debut on 3 April 1991 in the European Championship qualifier against Switzerland when he was substitute for Florin Răducioiu in the 89th minute. On 17 April 1991 he succeeded in the friendly match against Spain in Cáceres his only international goal. Timofte belonged to the squad of coach Mircea Rădulescu until it was replaced in early 1992 after failing European Championship qualifier Cornel Dinu. Under Dinu he only came in the World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands on 20 May 1992 for use and was then no longer considered.

After almost three years Anghel Iordănescu Timofte took in February 1995 back to the national team, but used him sporadically. For the last time he ran on 15 November 1995 in the final European Championship qualifier against Slovakia on the national team.
