History

Iona Abbey

Probably a new church building near the former monastery was built in the 12th century. Its existence is not secured and is solely derived from the foundations of the later monastery. Secured is the construction of a Romanesque church building in the year 1190th north of the church then new monasteries were built, indicating their existence from a papal entry from the year 1203. It was probably only a short time previously built by Benedictine monks. Unusually, the monastery is located north of the church. Probably, the water supply to the background of this rare arrangement represents only a few years later south of the plant with the Iona Nunnery a nunnery of the Augustinian. Other buildings were added in the 13th century to 1420. Probably around 1500, an extensive renovation was undertaken, in which also passages and parts of buildings have been extended. Also, individual parts were rebuilt and ornaments attached. In 1507 the church was then promoted to the cathedral. 1561, the plant was at the behest of the Synod of Argyll cleared and abandoned.

Rebuilding

1588 Hector Maclean of Duart received from Clan MacLean, the former monastery as a gift. Exactly one hundred years later it was Archibald Campbell, 10th Earl of Argyll, to then. Its descendant of George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll eventually bequeathed the lands of 1899, the Church of Scotland. Until that time, most of the buildings of the medieval monastery were already partially forfeited. Between 1902 and 1910 the first reconstruction of the church building was initiated. The 1938 resulting community of Iona Community began in 1939 with the restoration of the rest of the system.
