Iona Campagnolo

Iona Campagnolo, PC, OC, OBC ( born October 18, 1932 on Galiano Iceland, British Columbia than Iona Hardy ) is a Canadian politician. She was from 1974 to 1979 Member of the House of Commons and was a member of the Cabinet. From 2001 to 2007 she was Deputy Governor of the Province of British Columbia.

Biography

Campagnolo grew up in Prince Rupert, where she began to work later as a radio presenter. Later, she also hosted television shows on PBS. In 1966 she was six years later elected to the school board, to the City Council of Prince Rupert. As a candidate of the Liberal Party, she participated in the general election in 1974 and won the constituency Skeena. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed her in 1976 to the Cabinet as minister she was responsible for the areas of amateur sports and fitness. In the general election, 1979, she missed the re-election just in the general election, 1984, she ran again without success.

Campagnolo has participated in numerous non-governmental organizations as a board member or director. These included the North - South Institute, the Southern Africa Education Trust, the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development and the North American Arctic Institute. She was also co-founder of the Fraser Basin Council. From 1982 to 1986 she was president of the Liberal Party, which corresponds to a primarily administrative position. From 1992 to 1998 she was Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia.

Governor General Adrienne Clarkson sworn Campagnolo on 21 September 2001 as Vice- Governor of British Columbia. This representative office she held until September 30, 2007, she was the first woman in that position.
