Ionia County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ionia.

Geography

The County is located south of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1503 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clinton County, Eaton County, Barry County, Kent County and Montcalm County.

History

Ionia County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named after Ionia, an ancient landscape on the west coast of Asia Minor, modern day Turkey.
