Ionia County, Michigan

Ionia County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ionia.

Geography

The County is located south of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1503 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clinton County, Eaton County, Barry County, Kent County and Montcalm County.

History

Ionia County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named after Ionia, an ancient landscape on the west coast of Asia Minor, modern day Turkey.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Ionia County 61 518 people in 20,606 households and 15,145 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.96 percent White, 4.56 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.04 percent from other races groups; 1.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 20,606 households out of which 38.1 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers and 26.5 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent of all households and 8.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.

26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.5 percent of 18 to 24 years 31.0 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 10.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 115.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 120.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 43,074, and the median income for a family $ 49,797. Males have a median income of $ 36,995, women $ 25,443. The per capita income was $ 17,451. 6.8 percent of families and 8.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
