Ionian mode

The ionic mode, short Ionic is next to one of the Aeolian the system of church modes added in the 16th century by Glarean authentic modes. In the extended ( consisting of twelve keys ) system of church modes Ionic is the eleventh tone (indicated by the Ambitus c- c1, the repercussa g and the final, c). From ionic scales emerged today's major scale. In this scale is a semitone between the third and fourth and the seventh and eighth stage, the other intervals are whole steps.

Examples of the use of ionic mode is the Christmas song Vom Himmel hoch, where I'm from ( Martin Luther, 1539) or the folk song Three leaves on a Linden ( 1540).

In the description Ionic jazz modal used in the context of modal scales instead of major occasionally.
