Ionomycin is formed by the bacterium Streptomyces conglobatus substance belonging to the group of ionophores. Such as ionomycin calcium ions can be transported across biological membranes, which is why it is used in research.

There have been described several effects:

  • Ionomycin triggered cell death of nerve cells in the embryonic cerebral cortex from ( apoptotic degeneration of embryonic cortical neurons).
  • It affected the intracellular production of the cytokines interferon, perforin, interleukin -2 and interleukin- 4, which play an important role in inflammatory processes.

Commercially ionomycin is as free acid or calcium salt.
