Iowa Senate

The Senate of Iowa (Iowa Senate ) is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly, the legislature of the U.S. state of Iowa.

The chamber of parliament is made up of 50 members representing an electoral district respectively. Each of these units includes a fixed average rate of 59,500 inhabitants and corresponds to two electoral districts for the House of Representatives of the State. The senators are elected for four -year terms; limiting the terms of office does not exist. Half of the members provides each every two years to vote.

The meeting room of the Senate is located together with the House of Representatives in the Iowa State Capitol in the capital Des Moines.

President of the Senate

The body above the President of the Senate has in comparison to the Speaker of the House of Representatives less authority. So he can not forgive presided over the committees and also withdraw any membership on the committees. Since a 1991 which came into force extension to the Political Constitution of the respective Lieutenant Governor no longer exercise the office of President of the Senate, but limits itself to perform assigned tasks by the Governor.

To the President of the Senate Democrat Pam Jochum was selected from the electoral district of Dubuque. President pro tempore is the Democrat Steve Sodders.

For Majority Leader ( Majority leader) of the Democrats was Michael Gronstal selected from Council Bluffs; Leader of the opposition (minority leader) is the Republican Bill Dix.

  • Steve King, since 2003 deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives for Iowa.
  • Samuel Jordan Kirkwood, two-time Governor of Iowa ( 1860-1864, 1876-1877 ), two-time U.S. Senator ( 1866-1867, 1877-1881 ), Secretary of the Interior from 1881 to 1882.
  • Tom Vilsack, Governor of Iowa of some 1999 to 2007.
  • George A. Wilson, Governor of Iowa of some 1939 until 1943.
  • George G. Wright, U.S. Senator from 1871 to 1877.
