Ipiales

Ipiales is located at 2,900 m altitude in Departemento Nariño city in southeastern Colombia, only 5 km from the border with Ecuador. 2003, the city had 75,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area live about 100,000 people, most of them mestizos and indigenous people ( Indians ). Ipiales is also the city of the three volcanoes called ( la ciudad de los tres volcanes ), as you can see from Ipiales from the three volcanoes Cumbal, Chile and Azufral. The proximity to the border gives the city its economic importance. In addition, in Ipiales very many shoes are produced (more than 1500 daily) and also sold. Many Ecuadorians make day trips to Ipiales to shop there conveniently located in one of the many shoe shops.

The largest attraction in the area of Ipiales is the Sanctuary of Las Lajas ( full name: El Santuario de la Virgen del Rosario de Las Lajas en Ipiales ). The church is built outside of town on a bridge over a ravine, the altar is built directly into the rock.

Ipiales is the birthplace of composer Gustavo Parra Arévalo (* 1963).
