iPrint

Novell iPrint is a service provided by Novell that enables users of an Open Enterprise Server infrastructure, via the Internet to print anywhere on any printer.

Explanation

The only requirement is a web browser that displays the available printers. Via the website displayed in the browser to select the printer and the device drivers as well as the iPrint Client is automatically downloaded, installed and configured (context, address, etc.). Thus administration, but also communication costs can be saved, such as fax connections etc.

Although iPrint is bound to NDPS, no Novell client is not necessary, but an iPrint client.

Based on IPP

IPrint is based on the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP ) - an industry standard that tries to simplify the complexity of printing over the Internet.

The following are the benefits of the IPP:

  • It uses the Internet Protocol
  • It supports a broad network of providers
  • It works locally, but also on the Internet
  • It supports secure connections (SSL, TLS)
  • It works on most major platforms (Windows, NetWare, Macintosh, Linux, UNIX, etc. )

Benefits of iPrint

  • Automatically download and install printer drivers
  • Web - based printing interface
  • Adjustable user interface ( thereby tiers, all printers of a company can, for example, are displayed, and the user can install a printer from their nearby)
  • Secure data transfer
  • EDirectory integration for secure printing

Components

IPrint consists of several components that work together (simplified representation of the most important functions):

  • On the host computer (server): IPP server: The IPP server is the network front end of iPrint. It accepts print jobs from clients and forwards them to the Print Manager on.
  • Print Manager: Pro iPrint host exists a Print Manager that manages the Printer Agents ( see below). It accepts print jobs from the IPP server and distributes them to the Printer Agents. It also regulates the access permissions.
  • Printer Agent: For each printer, a Printer Agent, which supplies this printer with print jobs exist. It communicates with the printer over the iPrint Gateway.
  • IPrint Gateway: The gateway is the backend that forwards the processed print jobs to the printer.
  • Driver Store: The Driver Store only occurs when you install a printer on a client in action, then it provides the appropriate drivers are available so that the user does not need to take care of an installation source.

IPrint needs as a basis NDPS infrastructure, but has in addition to NDPS still own additional components:

  • Several browser plug -ins, as no Novell Client is required.
  • Ippsrvr.nlm - the service running on the server
  • Websites - To install the iPrint client and the printer and print jobs to view and manage.
  • To make MapDesigner to iPrint maps with the printers.
