Ira Davenport (politician)

Ira Davenport ( born June 28, 1841 in Hornellsville, Steuben County, New York, † October 6, 1904 in Bath, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1847, Ira Davenport came with his father to Bath, where he later attended the local Haverling Academy. He also completed the Russell Collegiate School in New Haven (Connecticut). After the death of his father in 1868 he took over the management of his large estates and the other business connections. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1878 and 1881 he was a member of the Senate of New York; 1881-1883 he worked as comptroller for the State Government. In 1885, he ran unsuccessfully for the governorship of New York.

In the congressional elections of 1884 Davenport was the 29th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the exchanged in the 28th District Democrat John Arnot on March 4, 1885. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1889 two legislative sessions. In 1888, Ira Davenport gave up another candidacy. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died on October 6, 1904 in Bath and was buried in the family cemetery there on his estate Riverside.
