Iraan, Texas

Iraan is a small town in Pecos County in the U.S. state of Texas. The place was named for Ira and Ann Yates, the owners of the land on which the town was built.

Geography

Iraan is located in west-central Texas 26 km north-west of Sheffield (Texas ) at the intersection of State Highway 349 and U.S. Highway 190 in a bend of the Pecos River.

History

After 1926, the Yates oil field was discovered in Pecos County, was from the oil field -disclosing oil company in the immediate vicinity of the oil reserve built a city that was used to supply the workers. In 1927 the Ohio Oil Company, the infrastructure of established and 1930, the population of the place already in 1600.

Even before the establishment of Iraan a first bearing of oil workers, which meant Redbarn already formed in 1926 about five kilometers south next to the ranch of Ira ​​Yates. With the decline in oil production, the population dropped to 951 in 1967. Due to the strong demand for oil in the 1970s and 1980s, the population of the town grew to 1,358 in 1986, after which the population decreased from 1,322 in 1990 to 1,238 in 2000. since then, the population has remained relatively stable in 2010 was 1,229.
