The ITC won three seats in the new Iraqi parliament. However, it joined the United Iraqi Alliance.

The party operates the television Türkmeneli TV, a newspaper and a website.

However, the ITC is not the only Turkmen party.

History

The ITC was established on 25 April 1995 as a merger of several parties:

  • Provencal Turkmenenpartei
  • Iraqi Turkmen National Party
  • Movement independent Turkmen
  • Iraqi Turkmen Justice Party
  • Turkmen Islamic Movement of Iraq

Since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the ITC claimed control over Kirkuk and other cities with Turkmen population. However, these areas are located in the autonomous region of Kurdistan. The ITC rejects a federal state that is based on ethnic groups. Because that would mean that the Kurds would dominate most Turkmen areas. They advocate more of a breakdown by the current provincial boundaries. However, the ITC has also expressed a desire for an autonomous Turkmen region to be drawn from Tal Afar to cross to Kirkuk.

In the election of 30 January 2005, the ITC received only 90,000 votes, reaching only 1.1 percent. The ITC led this poor performance back on repression of the Kurdish side. There are many Turkmen prevented the election or been placed but no ballot boxes in Turkmen districts. The ITC was against the Kurds, who returned to Kirkuk to grant the right to vote. Other parties had entered into with Shiite or Kurdish parties electoral alliances.
