IRE (unit)

The IRE unit is a unit which to assess the level of analog television signals ( abbreviated composite, Eng. Composite video ) will be used. It is particularly common in North America and is derived from the abbreviation of the former organization Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE ) from.

A value of 100 IRE is defined as the signal swing between a black and a white video image content. This corresponds to 0 IRE black image content and a voltage of 0 V. The composite sync pulses in the blanking interval normally lie beneath this black level and are set at a level of -40 IRE. It follows that a composite video signal from the minimum to the maximum signal level is 140 IRE.

The unit IRE is a relative, dimensionless unit and is comparable to a level specified and used in the standard ITU -R BT.470 to describe the video standards NTSC, PAL and SECAM.
