Iredell County, North Carolina

Iredell County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Statesville.

Geography

The County is located in west-central North Carolina and has an area of 1546 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Yadkin County, Davie County, Rowan County, Cabarrus County, Mecklenburg County, Lincoln County, Catawba County, Alexander County and Wilkes County.

Iredell County is divided into 16 townships: Barringer, Bethany, Chambersburg, Concord, Coddle Creek, Cool Springs, Davidson, Eagle Mills, Fall Town, New Hope, Olin, Sharpe Castle, Shiloh, Statesville, Turner Castle and Union Grove.

History

Iredell County was formed on November 3, 1788 from parts of Rowan County. It was named for James Iredell, the Attorney General of North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Iredell County 122 660 people in 47,360 households and 34,667 families. The population density was 82 people per square kilometer.
