Irei no hi

Irei no hi (Japanese慰霊の日​​, memorial day for the souls of the dead ) is a Japanese Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on 23 June in Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands.

Origin

The Memorial commemorates the end of the battle for Okinawa on 23 June 1945 in the Pacific War. First, the Irei no hi was because of the civil law to the holidays of the people (国民の祝日に関する法律) from 1948 is an official holiday. When the Americans the main island of Okinawa were returning on May 15, 1972 to the Japanese and Okinawa formally antiziperte Japanese law, then lacked a legal basis for the holiday. 1991 by the administration of Okinawa Prefecture legal regulation of holidays decided dernach the Irei no hi again since then is an official and legally compliant holiday.
