Ireland at the 1956 Summer Olympics
Ireland participated in the Olympic Summer Games 1956 in Melbourne, Australia as well as equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden, in part of a delegation of 18 athletes (17 men and one woman) in 17 competitions in five sports. There were five medals ( one each gold and silver and three bronze ) to be won. The youngest athlete was the boxer Johnny Caldwell (18 years and 201 days), the oldest athlete was the rider Harry Freeman -Jackson (45 years and 171 days). It was the fifth participation of the country in the Olympic Summer Games. Standard-bearer was the boxer Tony Byrne.
