The Iresinen ( Iresine ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family Amaranthaceae ( Amaranthaceae ).

Description

Iresine species grow as annual to perennial mostly herbaceous plants, rarer than climbing or self erect subshrubs or shrubs. The plants are smooth or hairy. The change-constant or against permanent leaves are stalked and easy. The leaf margin is smooth to cut.

There shall be terminated composite, open, Rispige total inflorescences, which are composed of aged men part inflorescences and pendant eared inflorescences with many flowers. The membranous support and bracts often shine. The very small flowers are hermaphrodite or unisexual. The plants are dioecious, but mostly getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). There are only five membranous bracts available that are free or fused at their base. In the hermaphrodite and male flowers five fertile stamens are usually present. The stamens are fused at their base. In the female flowers the stamens are reduced and very small or absent. The compressed -acting ovary contains only one ovule. It is more than a short ( about 0.2 mm) pen available. There are two, rarely three scars present. The fruits are globose to compressed and contain only one seed. The dark - red to reddish - brown, shiny seed is a lentil to a kidney-shaped.

The chromosome number is n = 15

Use

There are several types that are well known for their effect on the human body and some are used as a supplement for the production of Ayahuasca products.

Iresine species and their varieties are used as ornamental plants in parks and gardens, rarely also in window boxes, often used as a houseplant. Designing a carpet beds are frequently used.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area includes tropical Asia, western Africa, in the tropical to subtropical North and South America and the Pacific Islands (including the Galapagos Islands).

The first description of the genus Iresine was made in 1756 by Patrick Browne, in The Civil and Natural History of Jamaica, 358 A synonym for Iresine P.Browne is Dicraurus Hook. f
