Iron County (Michigan)
Iron County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Crystal Falls.
Geography
The County is located in west-central Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the south by Wisconsin and has an area of 3137 square kilometers, of which 116 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Baraga County, Marquette County, Dickinson County, Gogebic County, Ontonagon County and Houghton County.
History
Iron County was formed in 1885 from parts of Marquette County Menominee County and the. It was named after the iron ore occurring in the area.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,138 people in Iron County. Of these, 575 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,748 households and 3,615 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.28 percent White, 1.10 percent African American, 1.02 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, and 0.24 percent from other races; 1.16 per cent were descended from two or more races. 0.64 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,748 households out of which 23.7 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 37.1 percent were non-families. 33.7 percent of all households and 19.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.76 persons.
20.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.0 percent between 18 and 24 years 22.8 percent between 25 and 44, 25.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 25.2 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 28,560, and the median income for a family $ 37,038. Males have a median income of $ 28,791, women $ 21,077. The per capita income was $ 16,506. 7.1 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
