Iron County (Missouri)

The Iron County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. In 2010, the County had 10,630 inhabitants and a population density of 7.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ironton.

Geography

The County is located in the middle of the southeast Missouri in the St. Francois Mountains, part of the Ozarks.

It has an area of 1430 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water.

History

The Iron County was formed on February 17, 1857 from parts of Dent County, Madison County, Reynolds County, St. Francois County, Washington County and Wayne County. It was named, as well as the district capital of Ironton, on the happening in this area iron ore mines.
