Iron (III) bromide, is a chemical compound of iron and one of the bromides.
Production and representation
Iron (III ) bromide may be formed by reaction of iron with bromine.
It can also be obtained in the preparation of potassium salts.
Properties
Iron (III ) bromide may decompose at temperatures > 200 ° C, iron ( II) bromide and bromine. The reaction is reversible at a lower temperature.
Iron (III ) bromide crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system with the space group R3. The lattice constants are a = 639.7 pm and c = 1837.5 pm.
Use
Iron bromide is in aromatic substitutions (eg, electrophilic aromatic substitution, bromination of benzene ) was used as catalyst ( Lewis acid).
