Irregular military

Irregular troops are armed forces, which are typically less hierarchical and less well equipped than regular troops and are not guided by state institutions.

Examples of irregular forces are:

  • Guerrilla
  • Partisan
  • Rugaruga as auxiliary organizations of the colonial army in East Africa
  • Saddam Fedayeen ( in Iraq )
  • Franc- tireurs ( in the German - French War )
  • Irregulars (or volunteer corps, Italy under Garibaldi, Germany during the Weimar Republic)
  • Pindari ( in India in the 18th and 19th centuries )

The members of the irregular troops may under certain conditions be considered as combatants and therefore be protected by the Third Geneva Convention.
