Irving Abella

Irving Martin Abella ( born July 2, 1940 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a Canadian writer and historian. He specialized in the history of the Jews in Canada and the Canadian labor movement.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts (1963 ), a Master's degree (1964 ) and doctorate (1969 ) at the University of Toronto.

His book titles are: Coat of Many Colours: Two Centuries of Jewish Life in Canada (1990 ) and None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe 1933-1948 (1983). He is a professor at York University and former president of the Canadian Jewish Congress (1992 to 1995).

He became a member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Society of Canada in 1993. He is married to Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Canadian lawyer who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004. They have two sons.
