Irwin Chanin

Irwin Salmon Chanin ( born October 29, 1891 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York City; † February 24, 1988 in Manhattan, New York City ) was an American architect.

Life

Irwin Salmon Chanin was born the son of a Jewish- Russian immigrants in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. In his youth he lived in Russia before he again returned to the United States in 1907. In 1915 he completed his studies in civil engineering at the Cooper Union and founded together with his brother Henry in 1919 The Chanin Construction Company. While Henry acquired the contracts, Irwin designed in the next few years in Manhattan Art Deco building as the Chanin Building, the Richard Rodgers Theatre, The Century and The Majestic.

Irwin Chanin married 1921 Sylvia Schofler, who died in 1976. He was survived by two sisters, three children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
