Irwin County, Georgia

The Irwin County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ocilla, named after an Indian settlement.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Georgia, is about 80 km from the northern border of Florida and has an area of 939 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ben Hill County, Coffee County, Berrien County, Tift County and Turner County.

History

Irwin County was formed as the 45th county in Georgia from the Creek Indian country on 15 December 1818. It was named a governor of Georgia by Jared Irwin.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Irwin County 9,931 people in 3,644 households and 2,696 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer.
