Irwin County, Georgia
The Irwin County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ocilla, named after an Indian settlement.
Geography
The County is located in south-central Georgia, is about 80 km from the northern border of Florida and has an area of 939 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ben Hill County, Coffee County, Berrien County, Tift County and Turner County.
History
Irwin County was formed as the 45th county in Georgia from the Creek Indian country on 15 December 1818. It was named a governor of Georgia by Jared Irwin.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Irwin County 9,931 people in 3,644 households and 2,696 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 71.98 percent White, 25.88 percent Black or African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.25 percent from other races groups; 0.50 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.03 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,644 households out of which 35.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 14.4 percent were single mothers and 26.0 percent were non-families. 23.1 percent of all households and 11.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.07.
28.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 to 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,257, and the median income for a family $ 35,234. Males had a median income of $ 28,827, women $ 20,532. The per capita income was $ 14,867. 13.5 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
