Irwin Kra

Irwin Kra ( born January 5, 1937 in Poland) is an American mathematician who deals with complex analysis ( complex analysis ).

Kra studied at Brooklyn Polytech ( bachelor's degree 1960) and at Columbia University, where he in 1964 made his master's degree in 1966 and his doctorate at Lipman Bers ( Conformal Structure and Algebraic Structure). After that, he was from 1966 to 1968 Moore Instructor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he was Chairman from 1975 to 1981 the Faculty of Mathematics. 1991 to 1996 he was dean of the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics. Since 2004 he is a professor emeritus. He has been a visiting professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem ( where he worked with Hershel M. Farkas worked ). , The University of Perugia, in Santiago de Chile, Tohoku University, Fudan University, Shanghai (1987 ) 2004 to 2008 he was the founding director of Math for America, a private organization dedicated to improving college education in mathematics in the United States. He lives in Setauket (New York). In 2010, he taught at Northwestern University.

Kra deals with Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces ( Teichmüller spaces ) and thus contiguous with Kleinian groups and associated automorphic forms and their applications, for example in number theory.

1972 to 1973 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. He was on the Council of the American Mathematical Society, whose proceedings he edited. 2004 to 2008 he was the founding director of an initiative to improve high school mathematics teaching in the United States ( Math for America ).

With Bernard Maskit he gave in 1998 the collected works of Lipman Bers on function theory out.

He is married and has three children. His daughter Bryna Kra is a mathematics professor at Northwestern University.
