Iryna Khalip

Iryna Khalip (White Russian Ірына Халіп, Russian Ирина Владимировна Халип; born November 12, 1967 in Minsk ) is a Belarusian opposition journalist. She is the wife of imprisoned Belarusian presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov 2010.

Life

Khalip studied journalism and began her journalistic career in Soviet times. Mid-1990s, she worked for the Sovetskaya Belarus. She was deputy editor of the newspaper Belorusskaja Delovaya Gazeta, which was discontinued in 2006. Since 2000, she reported as a correspondent from Minsk for the Novaya Gazeta newspaper. They revealed cases of corruption and electoral fraud. Multiple she was arrested, two prosecutions for insulting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been waged against them. Khalip was re-arrested on the evening of December 19, 2010 as her husband after a demonstration against election fraud in the presidential elections in Belarus in 2010. End of January 2011, she was released and placed under house arrest. In May 2011 Khalip was sentenced to two years in prison verurteilt.Dieses decision was reversed on July 19, 2013 by a Minsk court.

Awards

Iryna Khalip received several international awards for her work, including the Henri Nannen Award 2005 "for her courageous fight for press freedom in Belarus ." In 2009 she was awarded the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation. In 2012 she was awarded the Hermann Kesten Prize.
