Isaac Commelin

Isaac Commelin (* October 19, 1598 in Amsterdam, † January 13, 1676 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller.

Life and work

Commelin Isaac is the son of Jean Commelin (ca. 1548-1615 ) and his wife Catharina Jansdr Valckenier (ca. 1560-1621 ). On October 4, 1626, he married Cornelia Bouwer ( 1607-1641 ), later the mother of the botanist January Commelin.

Since 1626 he worked as a bookseller and publisher in Leiden. After the death of his wife in 1641 he moved with his family to Amsterdam.

In 1646 he gave the assembled work he Begin end Voortgangh, Van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost -Indische Compagnie ( German: " the beginning and end of the Dutch East India Company " ) out. It contains contributions from 21 authors and is the most significant compilation of the history of the Dutch East India Company. The factory is equipped with 230 maps and illustrations.

Other significant compilation which he moved were the 1651 published collection on the history of Prince William and Maurice of Orange, and in 1665 published under the title Beschriyvinge van Amsterdam brief description of Amsterdam.

Isaac Commelin was a respected citizen of Amsterdam. In 1647 he became head of the Nieuwe Zijds Huiszittenhuis and in 1655 director of the Sint Pietergasthuis in Amsterdam.
