Isaac Noah Mannheimer

Isaac Noah Mannheimer ( born October 17, 1793 in Copenhagen, † March 17 1865 in Vienna ) was a rabbi, who is among other things known for his preaching and his ritual reforms.

Biography

After the emancipation of the Jews in Denmark in 1814 Mannheim was appointed the first royal catechists two years later. After he had first visited Vienna in 1821 and had created a program for the harmonization of the orthodox and liberal rite for use thereon, he initially returned to Copenhagen and spent the next two years in Berlin and Hamburg. In 1824 he was appointed as head of the Israelite religion school in Vienna. Prior to the legal existence of the Jewish Community Vienna, he bore the title of preacher, rabbi from 1852.

He preached the sermon at the laying of the cornerstone of the Vienna City Temple 1825. 1848 he organized together with the Catholics Dr. Anton Whisper a " ecumenical funeral " at the grave of the March Fallen. In 1848 he was elected by the town Brody in the Imperial Parliament. On his 70th birthday in 1863 he was awarded the honorary citizenship of the city of Vienna.
