Isaac Oliver

Isaac Oliver, also: Isaac Olivier (* about 1560 in Rouen, † October 2, 1617 in London ) was an English miniature painter.

Life

Oliver came from a French Huguenot family, who moved as a child to England and was a pupil of Nicholas Hilliard ( 1547-1619 ). Later he became its biggest competitor. Oliver is famous for the techniques he developed in the field of miniature painting. In this technique, he painted portraits (including Elizabeth I, James I and Anne of Denmark) and historical scenes.

After the death of his first wife Elisabeth ( † 1599) he married in 1602 his second wife Sara, daughter of the painter Marcus Gerards the Elder ( 1516-1604 ) and his wife Susannah de Critz. And niece of the miniature painter John de Critz. From the first marriage went forth a son: Peter Oliver.
