Isabel Marshal

Isabella Marshall, Countess of Pembroke (* October 9, 1200; † January 17, 1240 ) was an English noblewoman, wife of Gilbert de Clare, 4th Earl of Hertford, and first wife of the later German King Richard of Cornwall.

Origin and family

Isabella was born on Pembroke Castle, the daughter and the seventh child of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and his wife Isabel de Clare. Five of her brothers inherited the title after another Earl of Pembroke and all died leaving no male heirs, so the title eventually passed to the offspring of her younger sister Joan.

First marriage

At age 17, Isabella was born on October 9, 1217 at the Abbey of Tewkesbury with Gilbert de Clare, 4th Earl of Hertford, married, who was 20 years older than her. The marriage was very happy and she bore her husband six children. About this offspring she was, among other great-grandmother of King Robert I the Bruce of Scotland. Isabella's husband Gilbert died on October 25, 1230 on his way back from a trip to Brittany and was buried in Tewkesbury. Isabella was a widow at age 30.

Second Marriage

Six months after the death of her first husband she was married on March 30, 1231 in Fawley with Richard of Cornwall, the son of King John. The couple had four children, but three of them died in childhood. The marriage was not very happy, because Richard was known as a womanizer and had several mistresses.

Death

Isabella died in 1240 at Castle Berkhamsted immediately after a pregnancy of liver failure, she was 39 years old. She wanted to be buried beside her first husband in the Abbey Church of Tewkesbury, but Richard made ​​them buried in the Abbey of Beaulieu, only the heart was transferred to Tewkesbury to suit their last wish.
