Isabelle Stengers

Isabelle Stengers ( born 1949 ) is a Belgian philosopher.

Life and work

Stengers studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles chemistry. Together with Ilya Prigogine, she wrote the book dialogue with nature, where the attempt is made to draw philosophical conclusions from the non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is now regarded as an expert in the field of philosophy of science and works as an Associate Professor at the Université Libre of Brussels. She has also worked on Alfred North Whitehead.

In 1993 she was awarded by the Académie Française the big prize for philosophy.

Her father is the historian Jean Stengers.
