Isao Takahata

Isao Takahata (Japanese高 畑 勲Takahata Isao, born October 29, 1935 in Ujiyamada, Japan) is a Japanese director and producer of anime series and movies. He is co-founder of Studio Ghibli, and especially for his work on this production studio known.

Life

He graduated in 1959 to study at the University of Tokyo and worked then for the newly founded animation studio Toei Animation. There he met, among others, Hayao Miyazaki, with whom he became friends and he had a strong influence. In the 1960s, he also directed a anime productions such as Ōkami Shōnen Ken and Taiyo no Ōji: Horus no Daibōken. In the 1970s he worked with in almost all series of the World Masterpiece Theater, including Heidi and Anne of Green Gables. He promoted the talent of Miyazaki and supported this in his works such as Future Boy Conan and Nausicaä. The success of Nausicaä enabled the founding of Studio Ghibli, for which he, among others, Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday in the following years - Only Yesterday created.

2009, the " grand old man of Japanese animation " at the International Film Festival of Locarno was awarded the Leopard of Honour for his life's work.

2013, more than ten years after his vorigem film My Neighbors the Yamadas, his most recent film, Kaguya -hime no Monogatari came in Japanese theaters.
