Isidore of Chios

Isidore of Chios (* in Alexandria, † 251 on Chios) was a saint and martyr.

Isidore served in the Roman military. Since he was not willing to sacrifice to the Roman gods and held the Christian faith, he was beheaded. About the circumstances of his death several exist, some other versions. With his death, is the martyrdom of the holy Myrope in close connection.

The Agios - Isidore 's Basilica to have been built in the 5th century over his grave. In the crypt, his bones were preserved. 1124 the bones were stolen without head and came to Constantinople Opel little later to Venice, where they were laid in the 14th century in the St. Isidore Chapel in St. Mark's Basilica. About five centuries later brought a Greek versus reward the head also to Venice. In 1967 these relics were again transferred back to Chios in the Cathedral of the Holy Viktores.
