Iskar ( Bulgarian Искър, in ancient Greek Οἶσκος Oiskos, also Ὄσκιος Oskios or Σκίος Skios, latin Oescus ) is the longest river originating within Bulgaria and a right-side tributary of the Danube. It flows through western Bulgaria and crosses in his last section of the historical region of Moesia. It has a length of 368 miles and drains an area of 8650 km ².

The source of the Iskars is the lake Tschamowsko ( Чамовско езеро ) on the northern slopes of Rila mountain - 2500 m. This origin river is called Right Iskar ( Прав Искър ) - it flows into the Black Iskar ( Черни Искър ). Through the confluence of the rivers Black Iskar ( Черни Искър ), Left Iskar ( Леви Искър ) and White Iskar ( Бели Искър ) - all still in the Rila Mountains - gives the actual flow. The Iskar River is dammed by the Iskar Reservoir, located 30 km southeast of Sofia.

He then tightly flows past Sofia and crosses the Sofiaebene and the Balkan Mountains in a narrow canyon from south to north. He is the only river that passes right through the Balkan Mountains.

The Iskar River flows near the village Gigen ( Гиген ) and near the former Roman fort Oescus (named after the former Latin name of the river Oescus ) into the Danube.

Even the Thracians called him Oescus. On its banks moved the tribe of Serdier.
