Isla de Alborán

The Isla de Alborán is a belonging to Spain island in the Mediterranean, which is of volcanic origin. It lies between the Andalusian coast and North Africa, about 50 kilometers from the Moroccan Ras Tleta Madari and 90 kilometers from the Spanish Almería. It is administratively part of Almería.

Its area is 7.12 acres ( 0.0712 km ²). Alborán forms a nearly flat plateau about 15 meters above the sea level. The island and the surrounding area were collected in 1997 at a Reserva Marina y Reserva de Pesca ( Marine Protected Area ) and found in 2003 in addition as Paraje Natural conservation area. About 100 yards from the north-eastern tip is the tiny ( only about 200 square meter ) addition Isla de las Nubes.

On Alborán there is a pier, an unmanned lighthouse with a large abandoned lighthouse keeper's house, a small garrison of the Spanish Navy, a helicopter landing pad, a soccer field and a cemetery with three graves.

The first comprehensive description of the island in 1898 wrote Archduke Louis Salvator of Austria - Tuscany.

The marine area in the western Mediterranean around the island to the Strait of Gibraltar is named after the island of Alboran Sea. After the Isla de Alborán also the Italian Alboran Trio has named.
