Islam in Mexico

Islam in Mexico comprises according to the official census ( 2010), 3,760 Muslims, which account for less than 0.003 percent of the total population. There is little information about the origin of Islam in Mexico. It is often assumed that with the arrival of Turkish and Syrian immigrants of Islamic foundation was laid. The number of Muslims of foreign origin and the native converts holds roughly in balance. Most Islamic organizations in Mexico today focus on missionary " grassroots" activities that have the greatest impact at the local level of individual communities.

Islam in Chiapas

The Spanish Murabitun community, the Islamic community in Spain, is the Spanish city of Granada and maintains close links with the Chiapas community. The Spanish missionary Muhammad Nafia (formerly Aureliano Perez ), now emir of the " Comunidad Islamica en México " (Islamic community in Mexico), came shortly after the uprising of the Zapatista in the state of Chiapas and established an Islamic community in the city of San Cristóbal. Since then, there have been reports of numerous conversions of Maya and Tzotzil Indians. The President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, has expressed its concern over a growing fundamentalism and possible links with the Basque separatist Zapatistas of organization Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA).
