Islamic Salvation Front

The Islamic Salvation Front ( Front islamique du Salut French, Arabic الجبهة الإسلامية للإنقاذ, abbreviation FIS ) is an Islamist party in Algeria.

In the first free parliamentary elections in the country in 1991 the vote loomed after enumeration of 48% that the healing front straightaway 188 of the contested this election round would 231 win from a total of 430 seats, whereupon the military broke the elections, the president deposed that National people's Assembly dissolved and the state of emergency proclaimed.

As the Islamic Salvation Front was banned, most of their followers went into hiding and a civil war broke out, which claimed in the 1990s over 100,000 lives. From the Salvation Front split-off groups, GIA and AIS, resorted to methods of terrorism, while the front finally came himself in a joint statement with other opposition groups at the latest in 1997 for a peaceful solution.
