Islands of Four Mountains

The Islands of Four Mountains are a group of islands in the Aleutian Islands in the U.S. state of Alaska.

Geography

In the 80 -mile long island chain located between the Andreanof Islands to the west and the Fox Islands in the eastern Amukta Iceland, Chagulak Iceland, Yunaska Iceland (173 km ² ), Herbert Iceland, Carlisle Iceland, Chuginadak Iceland (167 km ²), Uliaga Iceland and Kagamil Iceland. It is bounded by the sea routes Amukta pass and Samalga Pass in the west and east.

The islands have a total area of ​​545.596 km ² and are not occupied.

History

The Aleuts who inhabited these islands since 5000 years, called it " Unigun " ( German: " Birthplace of the Winds " ), because howling storms are not uncommon here. The Aleutian considered these islands, especially Kagamil Iceland, as the place of origin of their people. They buried their dead here, mummified, indicating the spiritual significance of this place.

Because of the four major volcanoes Mount Cleveland, Mount Carlisle, Mount Kagamil and Mount Herbert Russian researchers these islands " of the four hills " christened (Russian четырехсопочные острова, tschetyrjechsopotschnye Ostrowa ).

The present name was created in 1894 on the USS Concord and published in 1895 by the U.S. Navy Hydrography Office (Chart 8).
