Íslandsbanki

Íslandsbanki hf. is an Icelandic bank. From 2006 to 2008 it operated under the name Glitnir banki.

History

The bank was created when in 1990 the three standing in privately owned banks Alþýðubanki ( Union Bank ), Verzlunarbanki ( Commercial Bank ), Iðnaðarbanki (Industrial Bank) and the related state-owned Útvegsbanki (Fisheries Bank) were fused to Íslandsbanki. She was at that time the only major private bank in Iceland. Since 1993 she was listed on the Icelandic Stock Exchange. In 2000, the FBA ( Icelandic Investment Bank) was adopted. 2004 bought the Íslandsbanki the Norwegian bank Kredittbanken. In March 2006, the name of the bank was changed to Glitnir banki.

End of 2006, Glitnir had assets under management of around EUR 25.5 billion and recorded a gain of approximately EUR 434 million for fiscal year 2006.

After Glitnir had come in the wake of the financial crisis from 2007 into payment difficulties, end of September 2008 took over the Central Bank of Iceland, on behalf of the Icelandic State, 75 percent of the shares for EUR 600 million. As part of the nationalization of the bank name was changed back to the original name Íslandsbanki.

2009, the state share was again reduced to 5%.
