Isle of Bombay

The island of Bombay was a coastal island up in the 17-18. Century. Through land reclamation, it grew together with the seven islands of Mahim, Mazagaon, Parel, Worli, Colaba and Old Woman's Iceland, which were eventually connected in the 20th century with the northern islands of Salsette and Trombay.

The island of Bombay formed the nucleus of the later city of Bombay (now Mumbai). It was named in 1508 by the Portuguese explorers and traders Francisco de Almeida, who named it Bom Bahia ( Good Bay ).

On the territory of the former island of Bombay is still the main port of Mumbai. It extended from about the present Dongri in the east to Malabar Hill to the west.

The island's history is inextricably linked with that of the city of Bombay / Mumbai, therefore, see the story here.
