Isle of Ely

The Isle of Ely is a region in Cambridgeshire, England around the city of Ely. It is 971 km ².

History

According to one legend, the hero of Cambridgeshire, Hereward the Wake, retreated into the swamps to organize resistance against the Normans from here. However, he was betrayed by the monks of Ely and is regarded as "the last of all English " ( "The Last Englishman ").

From 1107 to 1837 the Isle of Ely was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Ely; this was stopped by the Liberty of Ely Act 1837. From 1889 to 1965 Isle of Ely was an independent county of Cambridgeshire. In 1965, she was united with the new Cambridgeshire Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely.

Name

The name comes from Iceland of eels ( Island of the Eels ), because in the nearby rivers often eels were caught.
