The Isle of Sheppey is an English island at the estuary ( estuary ) of the Thames.

The overall flat and swampy island with an area of ​​about 94 sq km off the north coast of the county of Kent, approximately 40 km east of Greater London and was in 2001 approximately 38,000 residents.

From the mainland it is separated by the narrow river "the swale ." Originally accessible only by two ferries, the island is connected by a railway bridge at Queensborough, since 1959, a combined rail and road bridge to the mainland since 1860.
