Ismail I, Sultan of Granada

Ismail I (* 1279, † July 6, 1325 ), full name Ismā ʿ ibn īl Faraǧ was Emir of Granada from 1314 to 1325.

Ismail I was born into a branch of the Nazarite. After the fall of Nasr (1309-1314), he won the first Nasride that is not a direct descendant of the founder of the empire, Muhammad I, the power in Granada. He first knew the independence of the kingdom to secure by recognizing the sovereignty of both Castile and the Marinids of Morocco. Only after the Castilians had suffered on June 26, 1319 in the Vega before Granada against the Nasrid a heavy defeat to Ismail I felt strong enough to terminate the supremacy of these two powers. In the following years he was able to win back some border areas who had lost his two predecessors in Castile. However, Ismail was murdered already I. 1325. His son Muhammad IV (1325-1333) followed him minors to the throne of Granada.
