Isnello

Isnello is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 1562 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Isnello is located 80 km east of Palermo in the Monti Madonie. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelbuono, Cefalù, Collesano, Gratteri, Petralia Sottana, Polizzi Generosa and Scillato.

History

The present town grew up around a castle in the 13th century. In caves around Isnello around some very old objects were found, demonstrating that the area around Isnello is inhabited by people for a long time.

Attractions

In the village are still remains of the medieval castle. The church of San Nicolo di Bari, Cathedral of the city, was built in the 14th century, but then changed dramatically in the 15th century. Inside painting by Giuseppe Salerno and stucco work by Giuseppe Li Volsi are seen. The Church of San Michele Dating from the 14th century, the organ and the stucco work from the 18th century. The church Rosario was built in the 16th century, inside there are the tombs of the Counts of Isnello.

At the entrance is a statue of La Madre Madonita from the year 1987. It was created by local artist Pietro Giambelluca.
