Isobel Baillie

Isobel Baillie ( born March 9, 1895 in Hawick, Roxburghshire County, Scotland, † December 24, 1983 in Manchester, England) was a Scottish soprano.

Isobel Baillie was the youngest child of a Scottish baker and his wife. Early one recognized her musical talent and from the age of 9 years, she got singing lessons and won a scholarship to the High School in Manchester, where the family had now drawn. 1917, during the First World War, she married Henry Leonard Wrigley, together they had a daughter.

In 1921 she had her first major appearances with the Manchester Orchestra and in 1923 their first appearance in London, with a remarkable success. 1925-1926 had them trained further in Milan by Guglielmo Somma. After that, they had great success with the singing of oratorios in England.

1955 to 1957 and from 1961 to 1964 she taught at the Royal College of Music in London and from 1970 at the Manchester School of Music.
