The isocoumarin (1H- isochromene -1-one, 1H-2- benzopyran -1-one ) is a Stellungisomer of coumarin in which the carbonyl group and the oxygen atom are reversed. Biosynthesis isocoumarin extends over the acetate - malonate pathway and not as most of the phenolic compounds through the shikimate pathway.
