Isophorone diisocyanate is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of aliphatic isocyanates and polyisocyanates.

Production and representation

The production of isophorone diisocyanate takes place in a five-step process. By condensation of acetone with a catalyst obtained isophorone, which is then reacted with hydrogen cyanide to isophorone and this with ammonia and hydrogen to further isophoronediamine (isomers). By reaction with phosgene to a mixture of isophorone diisocyanate isomers, which can then be separated by distillation, is formed. The commercially available product is available as a cis / trans mixture in a 3:1 ratio.

Properties

Isophorone is a colorless to yellowish liquid with a pungent odor, which forms exists in two isomers. It decomposes slowly in water, and above 260 ° C, Nitrogen oxides and hydrogen cyanide. With amines reacts violently. It has a viscosity of 13-15 mPa · s at 23 ° C and a pour point of -30 ° C.

Use

Isophorone diisocyanate is used as curing agents in two-component coating materials, and is included in coatings and powder coatings. It is also used for the preparation of other polyisocyanates and polyurethanes.
