Isparta is the capital of the Turkish province of Isparta.

The city is 1049 meters above sea level in the western Taurus Mountains at the headwaters of Aksu and is the location of Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi.

Place name

In Byzantine times the city was called Baris or Sbárita. In the Ottoman period the city was named Hamid, after the name of the Beyliks that existed in the 14th century here. In 1891, the city was named Hamidabad and became the capital of a sanjak. The name is also connected with the then reigning Sultan Abdulhamid II. The return naming the Turkish form of the original name was 1922.
