Israel Regardie

Israel Regardie ( born November 17, 1907 in London, † March 10, 1985 in Sedona, Arizona ) was an occultist and magician.

He was born Francis Israel Regudy and was the son of Jewish immigrants. At the age of 13, he emigrated with his family to the United States. In 1926 he became a member of a Rosicrucian College and became interested in the occult.

In 1926 Regardie was inducted into the Societas Rosicruciana in America ( SRIA ), which should not be confused with the older Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. It was founded in 1928 by Aleister Crowley corresponded Contact secretary in Paris. In 1932 they separated from each other. 1933 and through the support of Dion Fortune, Regardie member of the Order was Stella Matutina (initiated in the Hermes Temple, Bristol) and went through the degree system to the Adeptus Minor. His religious motto was A.M.A.G. (Ad majorem Adonai Gloriam ).

In December 1934, he left the order because there were clashes between him and the guide. Regardie began in London psychoanalysis to study and later returned to the U.S. to study psychology. His studies included in addition to the psychoanalysis of Freud and the psychology of Wilhelm Reich and Carl Gustav Jung.

In 1937 Regardie most of the documents of the Order to him, and set it The magic system of the Golden Dawn together, which earned him the enmity of other former members and the reputation of a Eidbrechers. However, the book transformed the work of the Order in a whole new branch of Western occult tradition. Regardie justified breaking his vow of silence so that the magical system of the Golden Dawn should not be lost and be a possession of the whole of humanity. The various, mostly American occult organizations who claim to be rooted in the original Golden Dawn and its magic system, owe their existence and popularity Regardie's work.

In many of his works Regardie tried to combine his psychological knowledge with his magical knowledge. He distanced himself throughout his life from the teachings of Aleister Crowley Thelemas. However, he used all his life friendly contacts with known Thelemites and also worked in the ritual work with them, such as with the author and OTO Lon Milo DuQuette member.
