ISS Propulsion Module

An ISS Propulsion Module ( IPM, Eng. , About ISS drive module) was intended as a replacement solution for the Zvezda module of the International Space Station and the Progress cargo. Initially, only the Russian Zvezda module and Progress and from 2008 also the European Automated Transfer Vehicle used for important functions such as positioning, navigation, control and drive. If the Zvezda module would have been lost at the start or the start would be delayed, the IPM would have been used. The IPM would take approximately 9808 kg of fuel. In comparison, a Progress- M- 1200 kg and a Progress- M1 spacecraft take 1950 kg of fuel. With the Space Shuttle, the height of the ISS is typically lifted 232 kg of propellant, maximum, depending on the mission as well as with up to 1626 kg. The IPM was provided in addition to the use as a replacement for the ISS Zvezda module as its own, American drive way and would later complete the ISS. However, there were cost overruns and delays in planning. An alternative design of the " Node X" design, intended to use an inappropriate fabricated hull, which was scheduled for the Harmony or the Tranquility module, has been proposed and considered provisionally in the planning process. In this case, two removable fuel tanks should be used which would have been transported by a space shuttle. The replacement of the tanks would have avoided problems when pumping fuel between tanks in space. It was later deleted from the plans, instead, the ISS must relate to the driving of ATV and Progress leave. In addition, as part of the decommissioning of the shuttles a further reorganization would have been necessary.
